What You Need To Be A Photographer
Should you like to continue to be a photographer, then you should aim for more equipment.
Almost everyone has a Smartphone and that’s a good place to start photography.
I expect most people do start with one of those now.
People who never had any interest in, or desire to ever take a photograph, often acquire a Smartphone.
Possessing even average human curiosity, most people will try out the Camera before long.
When presented with the newly taken photograph, many people will want to continue taking photos.
If you want to try photography, and have or are about to get a Smartphone, start with that.
Not everyone who takes a photo will want to be a photographer, and to those a Smartphone won’t be a waste of money.
If you’re someone who doesn’t want a Smartphone, but would like to be a photographer, try this.
Buy a Fixed Lens Basic Camera that doesn’t cost too much, and that you can easily afford.
If you discover you don’t like photography, you haven’t wasted much money, and can live with the poor investment.
Liking it, and really wanting to be a photographer, you can expand your gear when you can afford it.
Starting out in photography
Whether you start with a Smartphone, or a Compact Camera, stick with that for some time.
Take several hundred or more photos with that basic set up first.
Some of the early photos will not be good, they never are, because there is a learning curve.
Get most of them out of the way before you invest in a more ambitious Camera.
You will always shoot some poor photos, but not so many, and not completely unusable.
Only someone who wants photos strictly as memories will stick with a Compact Camera as their only or main Camera.
Anyone who get serious about photography will move onto something with more potential.
Smartphones seem to be developing into very serious Cameras though, and may satisfy some serious photographers longterm.
For most though they will want to buy an expandable Camera System.
Interchangeable Lens Cameras
Moving on from a fFixed Lens Camera, there are https://www.amazon.com/s?k=mirrorless+cameras&ref=nb_sb_noss and DSLRs, both Interchangeable Lens Cameras.
Different Lenses are designed to take different types pf photograph, and extend the capability of the Cameras that use them.
Some lens are best for landscape, others for portrait, ones for macro shots and so forth.
There are Cameras in this bracket that are also developed specifically for different genres of photography.
Many are general Cameras that rely on the choice of Lens to take a specific photograph.
These Cameras come as Full Frame and https://www.amazon.com/s?k=APS-C+cameras&ref=nb_sb_noss, which means they have different size sensors.
Full Frame Cameras have bigger sensors and can shoot in greater detail than Cameras with APS-C sensors.
Moving up from these there are Medium Format Cameras which are the biggest Digital Cameras commercially available.
They have even bigger sensors and can record even greater detail.
While some Medium Format Cameras are reasonably affordable, most definitely belong in the luxury bracket.
Use a Tripod or Monopod
You only need your hands and eyes to operate a Camera, and indulge in image making.
They can also relieve the weight of a heavy Lens which can be hard to hold for long.
Tripods are generally used for subjects that stay put and don’t move about.
Monopods are useful for moving photography subjects like sport or wildlife.
Both can help get sharper photographs and allow you to shoot for longer while feeling comfortable.
If you decide to be a photographer, don’t wait too long before buying one, or both, of these.
Studio photography requires Lighting
Lighting is essential to any serious studio photography, particularly for portrait and product photography.
There’s little or no extra Lighting required for outdoor photography.
Having said that, it’s no harm to add a little Lighting capability to your photographic equipment.
If you’re interested in shooting a bit of everything, then a https://www.amazon.com/s?k=Flashgun&ref=nb_sb_noss or a Led Panel would be adequate.
However if you’re drawn to shooting mostly in studio, then you may need more.
There’s quite an array of Lighting equipment available and it’s easy to amass a lot without imposing restraint.
Other items you may need to be a photographer
There are several Filters that can be included in a photographers tools of the trade.
Filters are mainly used for landscape and other types of outdoor photography.
A Shutter Release is not necessary but it is very useful if you’re using a Tripod.
Memory Cards store all the photographs you take, a Camera is a worthless contraption without one inserted.
Cameras need to be kept clean and there are Cleaning Kits available to do just that.
You’ll soon need a Camera Bag
Whether your kit is just a Camera and Lens, or a lot more, you will need a Bag for it.
There are several types of Bag to chose from, and to suit all kits.
If you only have a Camera along with one or two Lenses, then a small Bag is what you need.
It’s easy to see your gear expand beyond this though, because it’s nice to add several Lenses.
When that happens you will need to have a Bag that holds whatever you’ve accumulated.
If you do have a lot of kit perhaps you should get a Big and a Small Bag.
The big one to hold it all, and the small to only hold what you take on a shoot.
You may only need a Camera and one or two Lenses for a particular shoot.
In that case you might lose or damage something you didn’t need to bring along.
Keeping your images safe
You shoot all photographs with a Camera but you have to store the digital images elsewhere.
Usually this is on a Computer, whether it’s a Desk Top or a Lap Top is a matter of choice.
The newly shot photographs are transferred from the Memory Card to your Computer for safe storage.
Computers are not completely safe though, they can and do have accidents.
For that reason, it’s prudent to save another copy elsewhere, because they’re all unique.
The first option for an extra copy of the photos, is an External Drive of some sort.
The second way of backing up what’s on your Computer is to use Cloud Storage.
An External Drive is bought outright, and as such is a one off payment.
Using the Cloud option is renting the capacity meaning a recurring monthly or yearly payment.
You need to learn about both and then decide which one you prefer.
Learn photography online
Once you’ve got a Camera you can be a photographer just by taking photographs.
However in order to take a high percentage of good, and the odd great photo, you should learn photography.
There is so many more options for learning things than there used to be, particularly online.
Taking Online Lessons in any subject allows you to learn at your own pace, what suits you.
Most online teaching is in the form on videos, on their own or with notes included.
You can stop videos, go back and watch a section again, or watch over as often as you want.
Some Online Photography Learning is in the form of a course with a set number of videos.
There are other where you pay for and study videos individually, choosing only what you want to learn.
Courses and Lessons can be general, or specific to one type of photography.
Get yourself a Website
You’ve invested in Photographic Equipment, a Computer and Storage, and in Learning Photography Online.
With that amount of commitment you should go the whole way and get yourself a Website.
You can use it to sell prints of some of the very best of your photographs.
Alternatively you can offer your services to undertake commissions. now that you are a photographer.
There are several off the shelf Websites that you can buy and just add your wares.
Another route is to buy Hosting and build a site of your own, or have one built for you.
This can be built from scratch, or constructed on an available site building platform such as WordPress.
Again evaluate all the choices available before you chose which one is right for you.
Be a photographer
You don’t have to get all of these things at once to be a photographer.
Start with the minimum required and add to that gradually as the need occurs.
Apart from a Camera the only thing that you will need immediately is storage for your images.
If you have a computer then just use that in the beginning, when you don’t have too many photos.
How fast you settle into being a photographer will dictate how fast you need to expand your capability.
Stay within an affordable budget until you’re sure you can recoup an extra investment in some way.
